Pilbara Escarpment

Category: Panoramic

Description:

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is home to some of the worlds most ancient natural landscapes dating back two billion years and stretching over 500,000 square km. It's the same size as Spain and takes up less than a third of the size of the state, which gives you an idea of how vast Western Australia is. The Pilbara region is characterised by its red iron rich soil and rugged mountain ranges. Its hot, dry, hard and unforgiving landscape of immeasurable natural beauty. It's sparsely populated, with huge mining operations dominating the few towns in the area. It is bordered by the Indian Ocean on its western side and central desert region to the East. It is home to arguably the countries most stunning gorge system in Australia, Karijini National Park.  This panorama is one of many mountain ranges in the region. The changing light throughout the day changes the colours and form of the landscape quite dramatically into the early evening. I love the subtle colours of the vegetation, with the spinifex grass dominating the foreground and the band of rich red soil.
