Description:

Orangutans are native to only two countries in the world, Malaysia and Indonesia. In both countries it is illegal to keep orangutans as pets or in captivity. Orangutan infants enter captivity primarily when their mothers are killed in palm oil plantations. The infants, cute and appealing, are taken from their mothers bodies and sold on the black market as pets. Orangutan rescues happen in a  variety of ways, confiscation by the Forestry Department from private owners or by local people handing them in.

This lovely juvenile male was in the second phase of his rehabilitation and had been in care since an infant. He was free to roam the forest but given supplementary fruits on a feeding platform if he chose to use them. The protected sanctuary meant he could come and go as he pleased. What is most striking about this image is the light on his face and those eyes. Sitting, looking up through the canopy to the sky, in an almost serene manner. For me this photo really sums up the plight of the Orangutan. Unsure of life ahead, but holding on and looking forward to what might be.
