Orangutans are extremely patient and intelligent animals, they are observant and inquisitive and full of fun. They have tremendous strength, which enables them to swing from branch to branch and hang upside-down from branches for long periods of time to retrieve fruit and eat young leaves. Extinction in the wild is likely in the next 10 years for all 3 species of Orangutan. They are listed as critically endangered by IUCN. With their rainforest disappearing at an alarming rate due to deforestation and clearing of land for pulp paper and palm oil plantations, it leaves little habitat to survive. Those areas that are available are usually degraded by drought and forest fires. Poaching and hunting is also a major contributing factor to their demise. But there is hope, there are some wonderful organisations doing some invaluable work. They need our ongoing support but there are other things we can do too, as consumers. We can buy only palm oil free products and increase the demand for this certification and inspire more companies to follow suit. It s a difficult task considering the many names manufacturers give palm oil, currently there are over 200 names given to the additive. I shall be posting a blog shortly with more information about how to be palm oil free. Watch this space.
