The Laughing Kookaburra is probably the most famous of Australia's birds and has the most distinguishable call. A raucous cackle is an essential feature of the dawn chorus right across Australia, from the northern tip to the cooler southern climates. They feed mostly on insects, worms and crustaceans. A breeding pair are believed to pair for life and it is usual, if you see one, there is another perched somewhere nearby. They are a common sighting in and around Perth both in the local parks and sometimes sitting on top of street signs or lights. They are easily distinguishable even in silhouette, by their stance or perch. They seem to favour the same perches, as I have often driven past them sitting on the same road signs at various times throughout the year. This beautiful specimen was photographed in an area just outside of Perth, by Lake Leschenaultia, he sits proudly surveying the scene below and showing off his beautiful bill and large brown eyes. This bird has an extended range throughout Australia and a large stable population. It is evaluated as of " Least concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
